Most children and young people with special educational needs will be supported through the school SEN budgets available following a cycle of planning, teaching, assessments and evaluation that takes account of a wide range of abilities, aptitudes and interests of the child. (The type of provision for pupils with SEN is decided through what is know as the graduated approach the ‘Plan, Do, Review’ cycle)
However, for children with severe, complex and long term needs and when school or setting has exhausted all resources available to them, an EHC Assessment may then be required in order to identify and provide fully co-ordinated support.
